Automatically generate robots: robots can also build robots

The "genetic robot " is moving toward a robot that can be completely self-manufactured without human intervention. In November 2010, German scientists created this automatically generated robotic structure using genetic software algorithms and rapid manufacturing techniques, and will showcase these mobile robots at the European International Mould Exhibition in Frankfurt, Germany from December 1st to 4th. .

For engineers, it has always been a huge challenge to model the movement of robots and move them or grab objects. Scientists at the Institute of Mechanical Engineering and Mechanical Manufacturing Automation (IPA) in Frankfurt abandoned the artificial interference of design engineers and successfully created a robot that can be automatically generated by a genetic software algorithm.

The robot consists of a cylindrical tube with a ball joint, wherein the ball joint can take on different shapes depending on external factors or the function of the robot to be made. Andreas Fischer, IPA's industrial designer and product developer, said that the only command that needs to be entered is to move forward as efficiently as possible along a horizontal plane. The fitness function included in the software algorithm selects the motion units. With these motion units, the “genetic robot” can advance along the surface, and the software determines the shape of the tube, the orientation of the motion point, and the orientation of the driver.

Automatically generate robots

The design of the motion robot is based on an electronic motor that allows the robot to operate smoothly. Among them, important environmental impacts including ground friction and gravity are taken into account. If the “genetic robot” is prepared to counter the unevenness, stair climbing or paddling on the surface, the software algorithm will also simulate these environmental conditions and provide more than one solution for the designer to choose the most appropriate one. Fei Shi explained that the "genetic robot" system can also be used to design sub-components, such as the clamping structure of industrial robots .

Bionics provides the basis for this "genetic robot" movement. When designing, scientists used extensively the laws of nature and used rapid manufacturing techniques to obtain the resulting biomimetic structure. The original genetic algorithm was developed by the University of Brandeis scientists Hudi Lipson and Jordan Pollack. After further optimization and modification of the software by Swiss i2p, scientists can directly obtain the geometry of the robot.
