Chinese manufacturer acquires 40 million Panasonic Ni-MH battery plant

According to Japanese media reports, Matsushita Electric has announced that its Nissan plant in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan, will manufacture nickel-metal hydride batteries for automobiles by the end of April at a price of approximately 500 million yen (about 40 million yuan) to be sold to batteries in Hunan Province, China. The report stated that because Panasonic Corporation acquired Sanyo Electric as its subsidiary, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce requested that it sell the factory on the grounds of the Anti-monopoly Law that touched the Chinese market.
It is reported that the battery business has annual sales of about 5 billion yen. Although Panasonic’s parent company will lose its nickel-metal hydride battery business, the Group’s Sanyo Electric will continue to manufacture the product. In addition, Panasonic will retain the rechargeable battery "Evolta" business other than the car battery.
