“At the end of this year, Foshan will take the lead in launching the first LED 'downlight' local standard throughout the country to promote product quality improvement in the entire industry.” Ren Weichun, Director of the Foshan Municipal Standards and Technology Research Institute, said in the training class that in the field of LED standard formulation, Many LED companies in Foshan can take the initiative to "attack."

According to reports, under the leadership of the Foshan Institute of Standards and Technology, a consortium formed by National Star Optoelectronics, Zhaoxin Group, Kathy Europe Lighting, and Blue Arrow Electronics began brewing LED "downlight" local standards in the first half of this year. Previously, the national standard for LED downlights was still blank.

“Customers mentioned that Zhongshan is a lighting fixture in Guzhen, while Foshan is a downlight and spotlight. In fact, commercial lighting including downlights is one of the biggest features of Foshan.” said Zhu Xinzhi, Secretary General of Foshan Lighting Association, Foshan. The right to speak in the field of LED downlights in the country must be consolidated and improved through the establishment of standards, and the formulation of local standards will be further promoted to provincial and national industry standards.

It is understood that there are currently more than 120 companies in Foshan engaged in the production and supporting of LED products, most of the companies are from the traditional lighting into the LED field. The application design advantages accumulated by these companies can also be utilized in LED luminaires. The unified downlight standard will provide a quality “ruler” for the Foshan LED industry.

Industry must go beyond local characteristics

Wu Yulin, the general manager of the LED "downlight" local standard and the general manager of Casio Lighting Design Co., Ltd. of Foshan City, said that the industry has always said that: first-class companies do standards, second-rate companies do brands, third-rate companies do product. Many companies in Foshan are still just bowing out of manufacturing, and OEMs (doing OEMs) lack the pricing power in the international market.

The lack of standards has led to an important reason for the uneven quality of domestic LED products and market confusion. “Our main push of LED mood lighting wanted to enter the domestic market as soon as possible, but the domestic market environment is not perfect enough for us to consider again and again.” Wu Yulin said that the current national standards for LED devices and chips have basically been able to meet the needs of industrial development, but There are still many gaps in the development of LED lighting product standards.

In fact, under the situation that many local governments in China have supported LED as a strategic emerging industry, how to seize the industry's standard discourse and highlight their own advantages and characteristics has become the focus of the government and the business community. At present, Dongguan City has begun to brewing the "solar LED lighting" local industry standards, and Guangdong Province has taken the lead in the last year to formulate "Guangdong Province LED street lamp local standards."

“If so many places are engaged in LED, if they can't find their own characteristics and differences, once they have excess capacity, it will be difficult to continue to develop.” Wen Shangsheng, a professor at South China University of Technology, said that Foshan’s biggest advantage in the country is in packaging and applications.
