Recently, Alibaba Cloud and the Malaysian government have partnered on a smart city initiative known as the Kuala Lumpur EA City Brain. This collaboration marks a significant step in Alibaba's global expansion into smart city solutions. Some media outlets have compared Aliyun’s City Brain with cybersecurity giants, though the author believes such comparisons are not directly relevant. However, the relationship between Alibaba's City Brain and the security industry is undeniably strong. The core of the ET City Brain lies in using artificial intelligence to analyze data from traffic cameras at intersections, enabling real-time adjustments to traffic signals and improving overall traffic flow.
Background of the City Brain
At the 2016 Yunqi Conference, the Hangzhou Municipal Government announced the development of the Hangzhou City Data Brain, an AI-powered system designed to tackle urban challenges like traffic congestion. The goal was to enable the city to think and make decisions based on data, ultimately creating a self-regulating and more efficient urban environment.
According to available data, the City Brain leverages Alibaba Cloud's ET artificial intelligence technology to perform real-time analysis of city-wide data, automatically allocating public resources and identifying operational issues. Key concerns in traffic scenarios include traffic accidents and pedestrian movement patterns. The project team uses deep learning and image recognition techniques to detect anomalies, such as identifying traffic accidents through video analysis and adjusting traffic lights or suggesting alternate routes accordingly.
If a vehicle’s movement deviates significantly from expected patterns, it may be flagged as an anomaly after reaching a certain threshold. This helps in detecting incidents quickly and responding effectively.
By analyzing people’s movement patterns through time and location data, the system can adjust traffic signals and bus stops for better efficiency.
Wang Jian, Alibaba Cloud’s Chief Technology Officer, has often emphasized the importance of integrating data across different systems. He once said, “The farthest distance in the world is not from the South Pole to the North Pole, but from the traffic light to the traffic camera. They are on the same pole, yet their data never connects.†He believes that without proper data integration, cities waste valuable resources and increase operational costs. His vision for the City Brain was to create a central "brain" that connects all parts of the city, allowing them to work in harmony.
Currently, the ET City Brain is already deployed in Hangzhou and Suzhou. In Hangzhou, it manages 128 traffic lights, reducing average travel time by 15.3% and cutting elevated road travel time by 4.6 minutes. The system generates over 500 daily alerts in the main urban area with a 92% accuracy rate. In Xiaoshan, ambulance response times were halved. Beyond the City Brain, Alibaba Cloud also builds open platforms in industries like healthcare and environmental monitoring, aiming to create a cross-industry AI ecosystem.
Alibaba Cloud’s Security Strategy: Cooperation Over Competition
The success of the City Brain relies heavily on the integration of various sensors, with cameras playing a critical role in capturing video data. Rather than positioning itself as a dominant player in the security industry, Alibaba Cloud sees its role as fostering collaboration. The company aims to expand opportunities for partnerships, especially with video surveillance vendors, to build a more comprehensive cloud ecosystem.
While competition exists, it’s primarily on the platform level. Competing directly with industry giants isn’t a rational choice. Instead, companies like Hikvision and Dahua have strategically partnered with Alibaba Cloud, recognizing its strengths in AI and big data. In return, Alibaba benefits from their domain expertise. This kind of ecological cooperation is essential for long-term success.
As the AI era continues to reshape the security industry, the way companies operate is evolving. Keeping track of top AI+security partners joining the ET Brain will be crucial for the industry. It’s clear that the future of security lies in collaboration, innovation, and shared ecosystems. Alibaba Cloud is not just building a city brain — it's redefining how cities and industries interact in the digital age.
