LED-based off-grid solar lighting system design

Solar photovoltaic power generation can directly convert solar energy into electrical energy. It is a new technology for clean and low-carbon energy acquisition. It is also a very important and promising technology for many solar energy utilization methods. People have long tried to apply solar power technology to lighting. In recent years, with the rapid development of LED technology and the continuous decline in the price of solar modules, LED- based solar lighting has been used more and more. Among them, the off-grid lighting system has attracted more and more attention because of its maintenance-free, no need to lay cables, and low operating costs.

First, LED-based off-grid solar lighting system is widely used

Today, about 4 billion of the nearly 7 billion people are classified as the bottom of the “income pyramid” because of low economic income. Their power facilities are incomplete and their lighting is dominated by fuel. Some 1.6 billion of these people have no electricity facilities at all, and their lighting relies on fuel lighting, such as kerosene lamps and candle lamps. According to statistics, fuel lighting consumes about 77 billion liters of fuel per year, and the corresponding cost is about $38 billion.

Light sources such as candles and kerosene lamps are not only low in brightness, easy to catch fire, have poor portability, have smoke, and have high operating costs. The LED-based off-grid solar lighting system is an ideal solution for this market due to its safety, portability, maintenance-free and operating-free costs.

In the construction of new rural areas, many rural public roads can use this lighting system. Because it does not require cable laying and is a one-time investment, maintenance-free and operating-free, this system has been promoted in many rural construction projects in China, such as the “Thousand Villages Program” implemented by the Climate Organization United Foundation. These systems greatly facilitate the evening outdoor activities of these village residents before use. Others such as garden lights can also see the off-grid lighting system. In addition, off-grid lighting has become an alternative to some professional road lighting.

Second, off-grid solar lighting system introduction

Below we briefly introduce the off-grid solar lighting system. A typical off-grid solar lighting system can be represented by Figure 1.
