1. Market Prospect of Power Line Carrier Chip

The power line carrier communication (PLC) chip is the main means to transform the traditional power grid, and as a powerful supplement to the Internet of Things communication, it will lead to explosive growth with the comprehensive construction of the smart grid and the Internet of Things. The China Semiconductor Industry Association (CSIA) expects that by 2014, the total demand will reach 50,000 *, and the compound annual growth rate (CAGR) will reach 61% in the next five years. The domestic power line carrier chip sales forecast is shown in Figure 1. Demand growth comes from three aspects: first of all benefit from the construction of smart grid. Power line carrier communication uses the power line as a transmission medium, without the need to invest again, and will become the main means of smart grid communication. Therefore, the construction of smart grid will directly bring about the increase in the demand for PLC chips, such as the increase in the demand for energy meters around 9%. Second comes from the increase in penetration. Currently in the early stage of smart grid construction, the utilization rate of PLC chips is still very low, but as the main technology of smart grid communication in the future, its penetration rate will definitely increase significantly. For example, the current market share of carrier energy meters is only 5.2%, but it is expected to reach 40% in the future. Finally, it will benefit from the construction of the Internet of Things. Power line communication will also become the main supplement to the Internet of Things communication. In the future PLC applications, in addition to the energy management of the smart grid, industrial control applications of the Internet of Things will account for 16.8%, smart home applications will account for 8.0%, and security monitoring will account for 1%.

2. Market demand space for power line carrier chips

It is estimated that by 2014, in the market application share of China's power line carrier chips (see Figure 2), in addition to the power management of smart grids, industrial control applications will account for 16.8%, smart home applications will account for 8.0%, and security monitoring will account for 1%.
