In the 10th year of the global economic crisis, 2018 marked a turning point as economies began to recover. This recovery brought renewed momentum to the home appliance industry, which was poised for significant growth and innovation. At an internal meeting hosted by the China Household Electrical Appliances Association, Jiang Feng, the association's chairman, highlighted this positive trend, noting that consumer demand was shifting from basic needs to more refined, high-quality products.
According to Yikang, a senior industry observer, certain appliances such as dishwashers, smart toilets, robotic vacuum cleaners, and other modern devices were experiencing explosive growth. In 2017 alone, dishwasher sales surged by 130%, while smart toilets saw a 50% increase. Other major appliances like air conditioners, refrigerators, range hoods, stoves, and water heaters also showed impressive growth rates, with many brands reporting increases between 15% and 30%.
Hisense’s air conditioning division had a particularly strong year in 2017, with household air conditioners growing by 42% and commercial units by 37%. Dr. Wang Zhigang, a representative from Hisense, attributed this success to industry upgrades and the expansion into emerging markets. While urban areas in China are becoming saturated, there is still significant potential in third- and fourth-tier cities, as well as international markets like Brazil and India. Hisense is also investing in cutting-edge technologies, including laser TVs, 360° climate control air conditioners, and heat pump dryers, which are expected to drive future growth.
Bosch Home Appliances China President Geerke shared similar optimism, revealing that the company achieved over 20% growth in 2017, driven by new product categories such as dishwashers, dryers, and ovens. The company also announced the completion of its new Chinese dishwasher factory, which will be showcased at the AWE China exhibition in March 2018. Geerke expressed confidence in the Chinese market and its potential for continued expansion.
Fangtai, another key player in the industry, reported a remarkable 33% sales growth in 2017, making it the first Chinese kitchen appliance brand to surpass 10 billion yuan in revenue. Fang Yong, Vice President of Fangtai, emphasized the company's long-term vision: to create Chinese boutique brands that promote traditional culture while delivering premium kitchen appliances.
The positive momentum in the home appliance sector also benefited upstream suppliers. Li Haibin, President of Haili, noted that the company's inverter compressors for air conditioners grew by 58%, commercial compressors by 87%, and non-air conditioning compressors by around 30%. He observed that the entire industry was becoming stronger and more competitive.
With so many leading brands achieving double-digit growth in 2017, 2018 looks set to be even more promising. While not all companies may exceed the 30% growth mark, the overall outlook remains highly encouraging. As the industry continues to evolve, innovation and quality will remain central to its success.
