Foxconn Surpasses Samsung Electronics to Become the World's Largest Smartphone Manufacturer in the Fourth Quarter of 2017

According to the Taiwan branch of market research firm IDC, Foxconn surpassed Samsung Electronics to become the world's largest smartphone manufacturer in Q4 2017, driven by significant orders from Apple’s iPhone 8 and iPhone X. This marked a major shift in the industry landscape, as Samsung fell to second place for the quarter. In addition to Foxconn and Samsung, the top five smartphone manufacturers included OPPO and vivo in fourth and fifth positions, respectively. Prudential also saw an increase in shipments, moving up two spots to third place, largely due to Apple’s demand. IDC listed the top ten smartphone manufacturers for 2017 as: Samsung, Foxconn, OPPO, vivo, Pegatron, LG Electronics, Inventec, Flextronics, Huaqin Communications, and ZTE. The ranking reflects a growing trend of contract manufacturing companies playing a more prominent role in global smartphone production. Overall, global smartphone production remained flat in Q4 2017, impacted by delayed hardware upgrades and weak sales growth in China. As a result, production dropped by 13.8% year-over-year, with only a modest 2.1% increase from the previous quarter. Looking ahead to 2018, trends such as higher screen aspect ratios and facial recognition technology are expected to shape the market. However, smartphone shipments are not anticipated to see strong growth until after the second quarter. Meanwhile, emerging markets are likely to become key drivers of industry growth, prompting major suppliers to focus on affordable and mid-range models to meet evolving consumer demands.
