Introduction: Xinhua News Agency reported that Japanese scholars have successfully developed a new material that uses this material to make blue LEDs, which can reduce power consumption by 90%. This new energy-saving technology can be widely used in traffic lights, next-generation DVD reading devices and automotive rear lights, and has a broad market prospect.
Since its inception in the 1990s, blue light-emitting diodes have been widely used in the production of mobile phone backlights due to their high brightness and low power consumption. However, the existing blue light-emitting diode manufacturing method theoretically has a limit of energy efficiency.
A Japanese scholar, Nakamura Shuji, and his colleague at the University of California, Santa Barbara, developed a new semiconductor film by crystallizing gallium nitride on specially processed substrates. The luminous efficiency of such a semiconductor film is 10 times that of the conventional material.
Further, if other substances are incorporated in gallium nitride, yellow light having a longer wavelength than blue light can be emitted, but in this case, the semiconductor film produced by the prior art is darkened. The newly developed semiconductor film does not have a luminous efficiency, and it is expected to be used to manufacture yellow or red light emitting diodes and laser diodes.
The team said that they are currently using this new technology to develop long-life, stable blue laser diodes that can be used in next-generation DVD reading devices, automotive backlights, and other areas that require high-intensity lighting. If the traffic light is replaced with this diode, it will save a lot of energy.
