I recently found myself in a bit of a pickle because every time I needed my USB drive, it seemed to vanish into thin air. Whether it was for transferring files or charging my devices, they were always out of reach when I needed them most. With how convenient the internet has become, USB drives are being used less and less. But when I did need one, I realized I didn’t have any that were reliable.
So, I decided to get a few USB drives as backups, just in case. To keep them organized, I chose different colors to easily tell them apart. Personally, I’ve always been a fan of Toshiba products. At home, we've mostly stuck with Seagate and Western Digital for our external hard drives, but for USBs, the T family seems to hold up well. After doing some research, I settled on two Toshiba USBs and one SanDisk 32GB model for their性价比.
One of the Toshiba models I picked is the white version of their Flash Series USB3.0 with 32GB storage, priced at around 69.9 yuan on JD.com. Another one is the blue variant of the same series, also at 69.9 yuan. Then there’s the SanDisk CZ600 32GB USB3.0 drive, which costs about 72.9 yuan on JD.com. These three USBs are among the most affordable options from major brands.
When it comes to performance, the U301 and U302 versions from Toshiba have similar specs. Both are made in the Philippines, and while their build quality isn’t perfect—there are noticeable seams and burrs—their design includes slots for lanyards to prevent loss. The U301 has a decent write speed of around 17MB/s and a read speed of 134MB/s. The U302 performs similarly, making them ideal for basic tasks but not ideal for heavy data transfers.
The SanDisk CZ600, on the other hand, has a more refined build, with a smoother push-pull mechanism and better joint handling. Its read speed reaches 100MB/s, but its write speed is significantly slower, averaging around 13MB/s. In practical tests, it handles scattered files faster than the Toshibas, particularly when dealing with larger files, where it performs almost twice as fast.
In summary, USB 3.0 drives have excellent read speeds, but their write speeds remain sluggish compared to older USB 2.0 models. For everyday use, a portable hard drive might offer more stability. If you're looking for something for emergencies or to boot systems, an 8-16GB drive would suffice. Larger capacities, like 32GB, aren’t ideal if your write speeds are only around 10MB/s, especially considering modern networks often support gigabit speeds, allowing stable transfers at 50-80MB/s.
Overall, the current state of entry-level USB drives leaves much to be desired. While they’re great for basic tasks, they don’t meet the demands of users who require faster data transfer rates.
