Foreword
Regarding the Xiaomi MAX 2 phone, it's clear from the feedback in related news and online forums that the overall evaluation isn't particularly high. Many people feel the price is too steep, and the configuration isn’t quite up to par. Personally, I agree with these opinions. After all, for 1699 yuan, there’s the Lenovo Z2 Pro with the Snapdragon 820, 6GB RAM, and 128GB storage. Why would anyone opt for the MAX 2? However, since this purchase wasn’t for myself but rather to help my aunt, she initially expressed interest in the Chrysanthemum Factory’s “Imagination 7 PLUS.†When I asked her what she thought of the phone, she simply wanted to know where she could buy it. I immediately recommended Huawei as the top choice, followed by Xiaomi, Meizu, and Lenovo. If she didn’t mind ads, she could even consider 360. My aunt quickly dismissed 360, Lenovo, and Meizu, leaving only Xiaomi as an option. Considering her primary needs—making calls, watching videos, and not gaming—the large screen and massive battery of the Xiaomi MAX 2 perfectly matched her requirements.
I ended up purchasing the phone from JD.com, and my aunt was satisfied with the link I provided.
Appearance
The packaging box has a classic design—nothing extraordinary—but my box seemed excessively large and cumbersome. Opening it was a bit awkward, as the lid kept folding back over itself, though it stuck on the other side. It’s a minor issue, but I’m unsure if this is a common problem.
Accessories include the phone, charging cable, charger, user manual, and SIM card ejector. Although I knew the phone was large, I hadn’t fully grasped its size until I held it in my hands—it’s truly massive.
When compared to smaller phones, one-handed operation is essentially impossible for most people.
On the top of the phone, the 3.5mm headphone jack remains intact, while the bottom features a symmetrical layout of a speaker and microphone, along with a Type-C charging port.
The front design is sleek and stylish in my opinion. However, the back panel is another story—it’s ugly, in my view. The gold color is unappealing, and I’ve never liked the "local gold" trend. I wish basic colors like black and white were more affordable options. I’ll have to wait for the Tyrant Gold version to release.
The camera uses the IMX386 sensor, the same as the Mi6 flagship. While the dual-camera setup of the MAX 2 doesn’t match the Mi6 in terms of imaging quality, the overall performance is still decent, especially given the price.
The phone comes with QC3.0 fast charging, which is standard for modern smartphones.
System
The Xiaomi MAX 2 runs MIUI 8.5, which consumes around 11GB of memory. There are 11 pre-installed apps, many of which can be removed. I deleted most of them immediately after setting up the phone.
The bezels around the screen aren’t as slim as those on the iPhone 6. In this regard, domestic brands like ZTE still set a better example.
Dual-app functionality is already common, but the MAX 2 offers extensive support for it, even if some apps don’t natively support dual-launch.
Screen
The screen on the MAX 2 has more saturated colors than the iPhone 6, making it more visually appealing.
Battery Life
Despite the 6.44-inch screen, the 5300mAh battery is impressive. Combined with the power-efficient Snapdragon 625 processor, the standby time is expected to surpass that of the MAX 1.
During testing, watching videos for 20 minutes dropped the battery from 59% to 57%, consuming 2% of the battery.
In a 44-minute session of the popular MOBA game, the battery dropped from 57% to 47%, consuming 10%. The frame rate remained stable at 27-30 FPS, with no noticeable lag or stuttering. Although the 625 processor may not be cutting-edge, it handles current mobile games without issue.
From 23:19 to 7:10 the next morning, the phone stood by for 7 hours and 50 minutes, losing only 2% of its battery.
Overall, despite the large 5300mAh battery, the power consumption of the 6.44-inch screen is manageable. Moderate use should allow the phone to last two days on a single charge.
As for charging, I neglected to take screenshots, but it took 2 hours and 18 minutes to go from 1% to 100%. Given the battery capacity, this is acceptable.
Conclusion
At 1699 yuan, the Xiaomi MAX 2 isn’t the best value in terms of pure specifications, especially considering the use of the Snapdragon 625 processor. Many users criticized this as a major flaw. However, for non-gamers who need a large screen, long battery life, and basic functionality, the MAX 2 is a solid choice.
PS: I’ve been searching for a split-screen mode for a long time, only to discover at the end that it wasn’t yet updated. This was a bit disappointing.
