According to recent reports, China Mobile is planning to integrate SD-WAN technology into the industrial Internet. Yang Tianle, head of the government and enterprise customer branch and Industrial Internet division at China Mobile Communications Co., Ltd., highlighted that this initiative can significantly cut down on operational and maintenance costs, while enabling three key functions through SD-WAN deployment.
During today’s 2018 Industrial Internet Summit, Yang Tianle emphasized that China Mobile is actively exploring the application of SD-WAN in industrial Internet solutions. This approach aims to enhance network efficiency and security for enterprises across various sectors.
Currently, China Mobile has developed a dedicated IoT platform to support industry applications. With SD-WAN, companies only need to install hardware boxes or cloud-based software at their network exit points to implement essential functions such as firewall protection, traffic monitoring (DPI), and DDoS mitigation.
Yang Tianle explained that the implementation of SD-WAN in the industrial extranet can deliver three core capabilities. First, it enables minute-level VPN connectivity, ensuring secure data transmission. Second, it supports heterogeneous networks, allowing enterprises to build a unified virtual private network. It also offers firewall, DDoS protection, remote upgrades, and differentiated connection management for more precise operations. Third, it facilitates cloud network convergence by integrating private and public clouds into a single Virtual Data Center (VDC). According to Yang, this reduces configuration workload by up to 80%.
In a case study involving the healthcare sector, Yang described how China Mobile provided a solution for a multinational medical equipment manufacturer. The company faced two main challenges: connecting each medical device to its global data center via IDC and VPN, and managing a large number of maintenance tasks. By using China Mobile’s SD-WAN solution, the company was able to connect 3,000 device nodes to the VPN with a single click, effectively eliminating the cost associated with traditional methods.
Another example involved a large engine manufacturer that replaced multiple security devices with China Mobile’s SD-WAN gateway, resulting in significant cost savings. Additionally, the company integrated both private and public clouds through China Mobile’s solution, achieving better scalability and performance. These real-world applications demonstrate how SD-WAN is transforming the way industries manage their network infrastructure and improve operational efficiency.
