In recent reports, China Mobile has announced its plan to implement SD-WAN technology in the industrial internet sector. Yang Tianle, head of the government and enterprise customer branch and Industrial Internet division at China Mobile Communications Co., Ltd., highlighted that this initiative could significantly cut down operational and maintenance costs. He explained that SD-WAN can support three key functions.
At today’s 2018 Industrial Internet Summit, Yang Tianle emphasized that China Mobile is actively exploring the application of SD-WAN in the industrial internet. This approach aims to enhance connectivity and streamline operations for enterprises across various sectors.
Currently, China Mobile has developed a dedicated IoT platform to support industry applications. With SD-WAN, businesses only need to install hardware boxes or cloud-based software at their network exit points to enable features like firewall protection, traffic monitoring (DPI), and DDoS mitigation.
According to Yang Tianle, the implementation of SD-WAN in the industrial extranet can deliver three core capabilities. First, it enables minute-level VPN connections, ensuring secure data transmission. Second, it supports heterogeneous networks, allowing the creation of a unified virtual private network for all enterprises. It also offers firewall, DDoS protection, remote upgrades, and differentiated connection management, enabling more precise and efficient operations. Third, it facilitates cloud network convergence by integrating private and public clouds into a single virtual data center (VDC). This integration, he said, reduces configuration workload by up to 80%.
In one case study from the healthcare sector, China Mobile provided a solution for a multinational medical equipment manufacturer. The company faced two main challenges: connecting every medical device to its global data center via IDC and VPN, and managing a large number of maintenance tasks. Using China Mobile’s SD-WAN, the company was able to connect 3,000 device nodes to a single VPN with just one click, effectively eliminating connection costs. In another example, a large engine manufacturer replaced traditional security devices with China Mobile’s SD-WAN gateway, resulting in significant cost savings. Additionally, the company integrated both private and public clouds through China Mobile’s solution, further enhancing efficiency and scalability.
