Former Tesla technical expert Gu Junli joined Xiaopeng Automobile as vice president of autonomous driving research and development

On October 23, Xiaopeng Automobile announced the appointment of Dr. Gu Junli, a renowned machine learning expert, as Vice President of Autopilot Research at the company. Reporting directly to He Xiaopeng, the Chairman of Xiaopeng Automobile, Dr. Gu will lead the development of autonomous driving technology, focusing on innovation in intelligent systems and software. His role also involves accelerating the application and continuous improvement of Xiaopeng's autopilot technology. Dr. Gu joined Tesla in 2016 as a key member of Jim Keller’s AI team, where he played a crucial role in advancing the company’s machine learning capabilities. He was instrumental in building the Tesla Machine Learning Team and was responsible for the development and large-scale deployment of the Autopilot 2.0 system. He worked on supercomputing projects at UIUC, contributed to Google’s research, and served as a chief engineer at AMD, focusing on big data and deep learning software. In early October, Xiaopeng launched its first mass-produced SUV with autonomous driving features. He Xiaopeng also revealed the company's expansion plans, aiming to grow to 1,500 employees by the end of 2018 and exceed 3,000 by 2019 across Guangzhou, Beijing, and Silicon Valley. Xiaopeng Automotive continues to innovate, applying new technologies and business models to create intelligent driving systems that appeal to younger generations. The company has completed the core system for internet-connected vehicles and obtained product approval from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. Currently, Xiaopeng has a large-scale R&D and design center, including labs, R&D rooms, and modeling design areas. A trial production center covering 25,000 square meters is under construction. In May 2017, Xiaopeng Auto established a massive vehicle production base in Zhaoqing, Guangdong. In June 2017, the company secured a $220 million Series A round of funding led by the UCAR Industrial Fund.
