Artificial intelligence traffic signs can hope to solve the traffic jam problem

Decades ago, the number of private cars was relatively low, and public transportation options were limited. As a result, traffic congestion was not a major issue. However, as populations grew and people moved into urban areas, traffic problems became more severe. Reports show that traffic jams cause frustration for drivers and waste valuable time. In fact, billions of hours are lost each year due to traffic delays, prompting both public and private sectors to seek effective solutions. Artificial intelligence traffic signs can hope to solve the traffic jam problem. In central Uganda, roads are already packed with vehicles, largely due to a sharp rise in car ownership in recent years. With 60% of the world's population expected to live in cities by 2030, and more people entering the middle class, the demand for personal vehicles is set to increase further. Despite government efforts to build better road infrastructure and deploy traffic officers, solving traffic issues remains challenging. Is it due to insufficient road space? Or outdated traffic systems? This is a complex problem with no easy answers. While various ideas are being explored, none have been proven fully effective yet. Integrating technology into existing infrastructure is essential, but many challenges still need to be addressed. Currently, the industry is experimenting with artificial intelligence (AI) to monitor and respond to traffic conditions in real time. Intelligent traffic signs have already shown promising results in some areas. Studies suggest that these systems can reduce travel time by 25%, decrease braking by 30%, and cut idling time by 40%. Installing them on the busiest roads could significantly improve traffic flow. Each intelligent traffic sign can independently decide whether to turn red or green. At each intersection, a computer equipped with cameras or radar monitors traffic conditions in real time. It then creates a schedule, determining how much green light each intersection needs to optimize traffic flow. When one intersection is analyzed, it communicates with neighboring intersections to create a coordinated network. Although this system requires a significant investment, it should be implemented first on major roads with the highest traffic volume.
