In recent years, the widespread use of radio-controlled watches and the availability of precise time through NTP servers have made it much easier to access highly accurate time. As a result, many application systems in fields such as finance, traffic management, power control, security, and sports now rely on accurate timekeeping. These systems often require numerous terminal devices to be equipped with correct time for data input and output. To meet this demand, Epson (EPSON) has introduced a real-time clock module that features an internal quartz crystal oscillator operating at a high-stability frequency. The real-time clock modules offered by Epson include the RX-4803SA/LC, RA4803SA (which uses a serial interface and is commonly referred to as the "4803 real-time clock module"), and the RX-8803SA/LC, RA8803SA (which uses an I2C interface and is known as the "8803 real-time clock module"). These modules maintain a frequency accuracy of ±3.4×10⁻⁶ across a temperature range from -40°C to +85°C, equivalent to a monthly deviation of about 9 seconds. This means the average daily time error remains below ±0.3 seconds. Despite their high precision, some users may still encounter small timing discrepancies of less than one second due to specific usage scenarios. The real-time clock modules generate a 1-second interval using a 32.768 kHz quartz crystal, which is divided down to produce the time signal. When multiple devices need to operate in sync, adjusting for errors under one second is essential to ensure time consistency across all units. Both the 4803 and 8803 real-time clock modules are capable of correcting such small time differences. Many of Epson's real-time clock modules come with a RESET function, allowing software-based adjustments for minor time errors. However, relying on software for time correction can introduce delays, leading to potential time skew. This is particularly problematic for applications requiring precise synchronization. To address this issue, both the 4803 and 8803 modules feature an ERST (External Reset) function that allows hardware-based time adjustments, ensuring more accurate and reliable synchronization. Another key feature of these modules is their ability to maintain stable time performance even in extreme environmental conditions. This makes them ideal for use in industrial, automotive, and outdoor applications where temperature fluctuations are common. What is a radio-controlled watch? A radio-controlled watch is a timepiece that includes an atomic clock and a radio receiver. It receives time signals from national time-granting centers via radio waves, which are then processed by the device’s CPU to display the correct time. These watches have an extremely low error rate—less than one second over 300,000 years. In short, they automatically update their time when receiving standard time information via radio waves. Radio-controlled watches represent the fifth generation of timekeeping technology, following the development of hourglasses, sundials, mechanical clocks, and quartz clocks.
