The 8K TV may be "postfired" in the future.

Although the color TV market in 2017 faced some challenges, emerging display technologies such as quantum dots, OLED, laser TVs, and 8K have increasingly captured the attention of manufacturers. Among these, 8K TVs, though a late entrant to the market, have made a strong impression. Sharp's launch of the world's first consumer-grade 8K TV last year signaled the arrival of the 8K era. At the recent 2018 CES exhibition, 8K TVs became one of the most talked-about topics. Sharp showcased its new 8K display products, including TVs, monitors, and commercial cameras, positioning 8K as a key symbol of its brand identity. Other major manufacturers like Samsung, LG, Konka, Hisense, and Skyworth are also investing heavily in 8K technology. Although Sony didn't unveil new 8K TVs, it released the X1 Ultimate image processing chip, which is capable of handling 8K HDR content—clearly a strategic move toward future 8K product development. In terms of panel production, Innolux began manufacturing 8K panels in 2017 and planned to launch 8K (60Hz, 65-inch) TVs in 2018. Sharp, too, completed its 8K TV development by the end of 2017 and aimed to mass-produce a 70-inch model in 2018 for the mainland market. Domestic panel makers like BOE and Panda Electronics are also actively planning their 8K strategies. BOE recently announced its "8425" action plan, aiming to promote 8K, popularize 4K, and leverage 5G technology. Additionally, BOE’s new 10th Generation production line underscores its commitment to 8K technology. According to industry reports, over 40 models of 8K panel products are currently in production or under development, with sizes ranging from 65 to 110 inches. This demonstrates widespread optimism about the future of 8K technology. While 4K has already gained traction in the market, 8K is now making its way into the spotlight, despite some gaps in content and ecosystem support. Industry experts believe that 2018 will mark the beginning of the 8K TV era. The Tokyo Olympics, set to broadcast in 8K, is expected to drive demand for 8K TVs. Foxconn’s Chen Zhenuo emphasized that 2018 is the first year for 8K TV ecology, and more brands are likely to join the trend. BOE’s former vice president, Yuan Yu, predicted that by 2020, 70% of large-screen TVs will support Ultra HD, and events like the Beijing Winter Olympics will further boost 8K adoption. TCL’s Chen Naijun also echoed this sentiment, stating that 2018 is the first year for 8K and that a larger scale of adoption may come in 2019. IHS Markit estimates that 8K panel penetration will reach around 1% in 2018 and jump to 9% by 2020. With the Tokyo Olympics driving demand, 8K TVs are expected to become a major growth driver in the color TV market.
