At Allegro MicroSystems, we’re thrilled to announce the launch of our latest innovation, the A5990, a cutting-edge four-way DMOS full-bridge driver IC. Designed to cater to both stepper and DC motors, this remarkable device supports driving two stepper motors or four DC motors, each capable of delivering an impressive output of up to 1.6A at 40V. The A5990 comes equipped with a fixed off-time pulse-width modulation (PWM) current regulator and a 2-bit nonlinear digital-to-analog converter (DAC) that allows for precise control of stepper motors across full, half, and quarter-step modes. It also enables forward, reverse, and coast modes for DC motors.
One standout feature of the A5990 is its Adaptive Percent Fast Decay (APFD) technology, which dynamically adjusts the fast decay portion of the turn-off time. This innovative approach significantly enhances microstepping accuracy, reduces current ripple, and minimizes audible noise while improving overall efficiency. Additionally, the A5990 offers a hybrid attenuation mode with a fixed 30.1% fast decay percentage, further optimizing performance.
For enhanced efficiency during PWM operations, the A5990 incorporates an internal synchronous rectification control circuit, reducing power dissipation. When not in active use, it can seamlessly transition into a low-current sleep mode to conserve energy. Protection features such as thermal shutdown with hysteresis, undervoltage lockout (UVLO), overcurrent protection (OCP), and cross current protection ensure reliable operation without requiring any special power sequencing.
The A5990 is available in a compact 6mm x 6mm 40-pin QFN package, featuring a nominal height of 0.90mm. It is lead (Pb)-free and boasts a 100% matte tin-plated leadframe. Target markets include dual-axis multi-motor systems such as CCTV (pan-tilt-zoom control), 3D printing, POS terminals (receipt and lottery printers), office automation devices (printers, copiers), medical diagnostics, and industrial automation solutions like ATMs and pick-and-place machinery.
