**Classification of Gas Adsorption Isotherms** When temperature, pressure, and the interaction between the gas (adsorbate) and the surface (adsorbent) remain constant, the amount of adsorption on a given surface is also constant. However, since the amount of gas adsorbed by a solid depends on temperature, pressure, and the affinity or energy between the gas and the surface, it is possible to measure and plot the amount of adsorption per unit weight of the adsorbent at equilibrium. The relationship between the amount of adsorption and pressure at a constant temperature is known as an **adsorption isotherm**. This curve represents the behavior of gas molecules interacting with a solid surface under controlled conditions and serves as fundamental data for studying adsorption phenomena, surface properties, and pore structures. Adsorption isotherms are typically obtained by measuring the adsorption capacity of the solid at various relative pressures while keeping the temperature constant. These isotherms provide critical information about the surface area, pore size distribution, and overall structure of the material. Understanding these characteristics is essential in fields like catalysis, environmental science, and materials engineering. There are six main types of adsorption isotherms (see Figure 1). The first five have been traditionally classified, while the sixth was introduced more recently. The shape of the isotherm is closely related to the size and number of pores in the material. For example, Type I isotherms indicate microporous materials, while Type IV suggests mesoporous structures. By analyzing the shape and behavior of the isotherm, scientists can gain insights into the physical and chemical nature of the adsorbent surface, making this tool indispensable in the study of gas-solid interactions.
