Rockwell Hardness Tester Failure and Maintenance

This paper mainly analyzes the common issues and solutions for Rockwell hardness testers under the JJG112-2003 standard.

Rockwell Hardness Tester

Analysis of precautions and faults during the hardness testing process.

Before using the Rockwell hardness tester, it is essential to check the accuracy of the device by measuring the indication error with a certified hardness block. This ensures that the equipment is in proper working condition before any test is conducted.

The Rockwell hardness tester is used for measuring the hardness of various metal materials. The testing principle involves applying an initial test force (F0) followed by a total test force (F). After unloading the main test force (F1), the residual depth of the indentation (h) is measured while maintaining the initial test force.

During the testing process, several factors need attention to ensure accurate results. For instance, the tester must be installed horizontally. To check this, open the back cover and verify that the weight is hanging freely and plumb. During loading, avoid touching the inner or bottom supports.

Another important step is to check the position of the boom. Use a high-hardness block (such as HRC) and apply the initial test force. If the pointer rotates three full turns and then half a turn within 10 squares, the boom position is considered normal. If not, adjustments are needed:

1. Adjust the length of the weight hanger and use the two adjusting screws on the boom to move it up or down until it reaches the correct position.

2. Adjust the height of the lever by opening the upper cover, removing the front indicator dial, and loosening the screws that hold the lever in place. Then, adjust the counterbore screws to raise or lower the lever as needed, ensuring it moves smoothly and is properly aligned.

Additionally, check whether the cushioning device of the hardness tester is fully loaded within 4 to 6 seconds. Proper adjustment of the cushioning system is crucial to ensure consistent and reliable test results.

By following these steps, users can significantly reduce the chances of errors and improve the overall performance of the Rockwell hardness tester. Regular maintenance and careful calibration are key to ensuring long-term accuracy and reliability of the device.
