Rockwell Hardness Tester Failure and Maintenance

This paper mainly focuses on analyzing and resolving common issues, precautions, and malfunctions associated with the Rockwell hardness tester as outlined in JJG112-2003.

The metal Rockwell hardness tester is commonly referred to as a device used for measuring the hardness of various metal materials.

Its working principle involves applying an initial test force (F0), followed by the total test force (F). Under this pressure, the indenter makes contact with the sample surface. After unloading the main test force (F1), the residual depth of the indentation (h) is measured while retaining the initial test force.

Before conducting a Rockwell hardness test using the HR-150 model, it's essential to check the accuracy of the hardness tester by testing it against a known standard block.

First, ensure that the hardness tester is in proper working condition. Pay attention to the following points:

1. Check if the hardness tester is installed horizontally. To verify, open the back cover and observe if the weight hangs freely and vertically. During the loading process, avoid touching the inner or bottom supports.

2. Ensure the boom position is correct. A method to check this is by placing a high-hardness block (e.g., HRC) under the indenter, applying the initial test force, and rotating the pointer three times. Then press up again and let the pointer turn half a rotation. If the pointer moves within three and a half circles and stays within 10 squares, the boom position is normal. If not, adjust accordingly.

3. Check whether the cushioning mechanism fully engages within 4 to 6 seconds. If it doesn't, adjustments may be needed.

Adjustments can include:

- Adjusting the length of the weight hanger by moving the two adjusting screws on the boom up or down to bring it into the correct working position.

- Adjusting the height of the lever. This can be done by opening the upper cover, removing the front indicator dial, loosening the screws on the top and front of the lever, and then adjusting the counterbore screws to raise or lower the lever as needed. Once adjusted, secure the four set screws.

By following these steps, users can ensure accurate and reliable hardness measurements, reducing the likelihood of errors during testing. Proper maintenance and regular calibration are essential for maintaining the performance and longevity of the Rockwell hardness tester.
