The World Internet Conference recently concluded, marking another milestone in the digital age. On December 9, the 16th Annual Meeting of Chinese Business Leaders, organized by China Entrepreneurs Magazine, brought together over 200 industry leaders to discuss the future of business and innovation. Among the notable speakers were Zhang Yong, CEO of Alibaba Group; Dong Mingzhu, Chairman of Gree Electric Appliances; Liu Yonghao, Chairman of New Hope Group; and Li Huaiyu, CEO of Micro Whale Technology. They shared their insights on the theme “I Believe in the Future and Activate Entrepreneurship.â€
At the opening ceremony, the event set a tone of optimism and ambition. Zhang Yong, the CEO of Alibaba, reflected on the origins of the Tmall Double 11 Shopping Festival, which has now celebrated its ninth year. Despite being on a business trip abroad, he noted that everyone was eager to talk about the event. He emphasized the determination behind the idea: “There was no way to live, but we had to persist.†At the time, B2C e-commerce was still in its infancy, and the goal was to create a unique holiday for Chinese consumers, similar to Black Friday.
Zhang also shared the challenges faced during the early years of Double 11, such as the system crash in 2011 that led to many merchants overselling. “The road to the future is painful, but we need to keep going,†he said. His message underscored the importance of perseverance and resilience in entrepreneurship.
Meanwhile, Dong Mingzhu, Chairman of Gree Electric Appliances, took the opportunity to promote the company’s mobile phones. She joked about how many people wanted to take photos with her, but she found it frustrating when they used non-Gree devices. “If you want to experience our products, why not buy a Gree phone?†she said. For her, entrepreneurship means doing what others don’t, focusing on core technologies, and delivering value to consumers. She believes that true entrepreneurs must have a strong mindset and a vision beyond profit.
Li Huaiyu, CEO of Micro Whale Technology, highlighted the difficulties of building a heavy-asset business in an era dominated by lightweight internet models. He compared his journey to that of Tesla, which faced skepticism from major financial institutions. “It's hard to do heavy work, but that's where the entrepreneurial spirit lies,†he said. In today’s competitive market, he emphasized the importance of dedication, quality, and understanding the needs of young consumers.
The event served as a platform for visionary leaders to share their experiences, challenges, and aspirations. With a focus on innovation, persistence, and the power of belief, the meeting inspired a new wave of entrepreneurial thinking in China. As the business landscape continues to evolve, the lessons from these leaders will undoubtedly shape the future of commerce and technology.
