To create smart speaker products, competition will intensify

In 2018, the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) marked a significant milestone for smart speakers as Google showcased the integration of Google Assistant across various home appliances. This demonstration highlighted the growing role of voice-activated technology in everyday life. Meanwhile, Qualcomm introduced solutions aimed at helping original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) develop smart speaker products more efficiently. As a result, smart speakers became one of the most talked-about categories at the event. With advancements in artificial intelligence and natural language processing, the smart speaker market was poised for rapid growth. According to Canalys, global shipments reached 56.3 million units in 2018, with Amazon Echo and Google Home leading the charge. The competition was fierce, as new players entered the market, driving innovation and pushing the boundaries of what these devices could do. Lucio Chen, a researcher at Canalys, noted that the growth of smart speakers outpaced other consumer tech categories like AR/VR and wearables. In 2017, hardware sales had already seen impressive gains, but 2018 brought a shift toward services and enterprise solutions. Companies began exploring monetization through advertising, content subscriptions, and other value-added offerings. More industry players from diverse sectors were entering the space, signaling a maturing and expanding market. The U.S. remained the largest smart speaker market, with over 38.4 million units shipped in 2018, followed by China with 4.4 million. Canalys predicted that the U.S. would maintain its dominance through 2020. Vincent Thielke, another analyst, pointed out that consumer adoption was strong, and many companies were working on smart home integrations to enhance user engagement. For example, Alexa expanded into a wide range of smart home products, while Google's acquisition of Nest and Apple’s HomeKit initiative continued to shape the landscape. In China, major tech firms like Alibaba, JD.com, and Xiaomi launched their own smart speakers, testing the waters and building brand presence. During CES 2018, Alibaba also announced a collaboration with MediaTek to promote Bluetooth mesh technology in smart homes. Lucio Chen observed that the Chinese market was evolving quickly, despite initial caution from manufacturers. With Alibaba's deep investment and Xiaomi offering more affordable options, the market was expected to heat up rapidly.
