The Hongqi sedan has consistently embraced a philosophy of "two highs and one whole," focusing on high-end quality, high safety, and comprehensive comfort, positioning itself as a luxury vehicle. For years, it has strived to establish itself as the top domestic car brand, yet under the leadership of the FAW Group, its sales have remained sluggish, nearly fading into obscurity. The high price has deterred many potential buyers. Last November, however, the Hongqi brand officially split from FAW, achieving independence. In its first month of separation, the Hongqi H7 saw a significant boost, with December sales surpassing 1,000 units, totaling over 3,000 in January-November of the previous year—a remarkable turnaround.
Since its launch in 2013, the Hongqi H7 has struggled with lackluster sales, despite being valued at 5 billion yuan as a symbol of domestic prestige. The high price point, particularly the 5 million yuan price tag for the Hongqi L5, comparable to that of a Maybach, has been a major obstacle. After separating from FAW, the brand pivoted, introducing a more affordable model—the Hongqi H5, expected to retail around 200,000 yuan, targeting the mid-size car market.
The exterior of the Hongqi H5 has undergone a dramatic transformation, shedding its overly formal aesthetic for a more youthful and dynamic design. No longer catering solely to mature customers, the H5 appeals to contemporary young adults with its fashionable and sporty appeal. Its front grille retains the iconic family-style design, featuring a large-scale waterfall-style mesh and all-LED headlamps, with the iconic red flag emblem prominently displayed. The sleek body lines and dual taillights, adorned with the "Hongqi" script, give the car a modern and classic feel. The dual-exhaust system adds a touch of elegance.
Inside, the H5’s interior reflects the same youthful and dynamic theme. A suspended LCD screen dominates the center console, complemented by minimalist multifunctional buttons and a three-dimensional multifunction steering wheel. The cabin features an all-black interior, exuding simplicity and luxury with its black leather upholstery.
In terms of dimensions, the H5 measures 4,935 mm in length, 1,840 mm in width, and 1,470 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,870 mm. While slightly smaller than the Hongqi H7 in size, its internal space remains ample, offering generous legroom in the rear. Paired with 19-inch aluminum alloy wheels and 225/45 ZR19 FARROAD tires, the car exudes sophistication.
Under the hood, the Hongqi H5 is powered by a 1.8-liter turbocharged engine delivering 178 horsepower and a peak torque of 250 Nm, mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission.
This new direction signals a promising future for the Hongqi brand, as it seeks to redefine itself in the competitive luxury car market while maintaining its unique identity.
