When traveling, we often rely on our smartphones instead of bulky SLRs, which not only lightens the load but also enhances the travel experience significantly. Additionally, it’s always great to capture moments and connect with friends after snapping some shots. With the advent of advanced dual-lens camera phones, high-quality follow-up photography has become more convenient. In the latter half of 2017, there were numerous dual-camera phones comparable to the iPhone 7 Plus, but OnePlus 5 caught my attention the most. Not only does it deliver impressive performance, but it also excels in photography. Recently, OnePlus officially announced that all versions of the OnePlus 5 would be available for purchase starting July 31st. The 6GB RAM + 64GB ROM version is priced at 2999 yuan, while the 8GB RAM + 128GB ROM version costs 3499 yuan. Of course, having a great phone with excellent camera capabilities is just part of the equation. I also possess some photography skills and favorable shooting conditions. Here, I’d like to share my upcoming photographic journey, as I’m curious about how the OnePlus 5 performs.
â–¼ã€Weather Conditions Affect Shooting Quality】A clear blue sky undoubtedly elevates the quality of a trip and creates ideal conditions for photography. Let's start with the basics. Whether using a mobile phone or an SLR camera, light absorption is crucial. In auto photo mode, stronger light allows more light to enter, increasing the shutter speed to prevent shaking. At the same time, the ISO sensitivity can be reduced to nearly 100 levels to ensure optimal image quality.
However, different camera brands have distinct imaging algorithms, leading to slight variations in color temperature. Some may appear bluish or reddish. In my experience with the OnePlus 5, the images tend to have a slightly warmer tone with higher contrast. On the screen, the colors appear more vivid than what the naked eye sees, pleasing to the eye. Please refer to the following examples.
â–¼[Environmental Composition Skills] Utilizing various scenes effectively is key. For instance, when encountering a curved road mirror, you can make full use of proportional composition for better results. Predicting angles in advance and ensuring the main scenery occupies a significant proportion is vital. In general, avoid including too many elements in the buildings and landscapes; cleanliness is key.
Additionally, leveraging the functions of the mobile phone camera is essential. For example, double-clicking the POWER button on the OnePlus 5 instantly launches the camera, especially useful for impromptu shots. Thanks to the strong support of 8GB RAM, the camera launch speed is impressively fast!
â–¼[Macro Photography] In daily life, we often need to capture macro scenes, but achieving the desired effect can be challenging. However, with the advent of dual-lens camera phones, mobile phone macro photography has become increasingly sophisticated. High-end phones typically offer a professional mode with options like ISO, white balance, shutter, focus, and EV compensation, making it easier to take macro shots. Mastering the "focus" technique is particularly beneficial. I don't recommend adjusting the focus manually on the phone but instead locking the MF focus to the nearest object (like a flower pattern). Then, measure the distance between the phone and the subject to ensure accurate focus. This approach ensures no out-of-focus issues.
I must mention that after enabling the professional mode on my OnePlus 5, I can choose to retain DNG packaged RAW image files. These files are usually over 30MB each, offering more color space adjustments using professional software like Camera Raw. This feature is quite appealing for photography enthusiasts.
▼[Dual-Focus Telephoto Shooting] One of the most important features of a dual-camera phone is telephoto shooting. Phones like the OnePlus 5 and iPhone 7 Plus support both conventional 1X wide-angle and 2X telephoto shooting. The left image shows the conventional 1X wide-angle on the left, with the 2X telephoto original output on the right. After pixel zooming, the telephoto output appears more precise and sharper. Overall, the OnePlus 5’s 2X telephoto is more reliable than traditional digital zooming.

To capture appetizing food shots, it’s essential to use the composition grid: 3x3, 4x4, and golden ratio markings as references. Top-down and subtractive photography are popular techniques. If you’re satisfied with your mobile camera’s performance, macro shooting is another option.
â–¼[Filter Effects] As we grow more passionate about photography, the built-in photo editing functions on mobile phones have improved significantly. Parameters such as brightness, contrast, color temperature, level corrections, and filters can be easily adjusted. While many filters are available, Snapseed, a retouching app, stands out for its excellent editing capabilities. It can also read and modify saved OnePlus 5 RAW images deeply.

The camera is fast enough to take pictures without delay. On the authoritative image evaluation platform DxO, the OnePlus 5 received an impressive 87-point rating, placing it among the top-tier mobile phones in terms of imaging quality, alongside Huawei’s P10. Nowadays, with消费å‡çº§ (consumption upgrades) driving demand for higher-quality products, OnePlus 5’s boutique strategy gives it a competitive edge in the market.
