Big draws Apple's fourth-generation Apple TV to get patent lawsuit

Apple and Samsung, along with Qualcomm, have been locked in an ongoing patent war that shows no signs of abating. Meanwhile, numerous smaller firms have also taken legal action against Apple, alleging patent infringement in their products. Recently, Apple's Apple TV has become the subject of yet another lawsuit. CustomPlay, a Florida-based company in the U.S., claims that Apple's fourth-generation Apple TV violates its patents related to subtitle rewinding functionality. Their software allows users to rewind videos by voice command for about 10 to 15 seconds and temporarily activate subtitles during playback. Max Abecassis, the founder of CustomPlay, stated that he had conceived this concept back in 1998 and secured a patent for it. Attached is an image showing the Apple TV in question, highlighting the feature in dispute. CustomPlay is demanding financial compensation and litigation costs from Apple, although the exact amount remains undisclosed. Despite these legal challenges, Apple appears determined to integrate advanced voice capabilities into its Apple TV lineup. Eddy Cue, Apple's Senior Vice President of Internet Software and Services, expressed frustration with the current state of TV-watching experiences. He envisions a future where users can simply say, "I want to watch the Duke basketball game," and the TV will display the requested content, regardless of the source channel. This push toward smarter TV experiences is part of a broader trend in the industry. For those interested in smart TVs and boxes, platforms like the influential Chinese site, Sofa Butler, offer comprehensive resources on the latest developments in smart TV boxes and software. These resources provide updates, reviews, and answers to common queries for tech enthusiasts in China and beyond. As the legal battle continues, it remains to be seen how Apple will address this claim while pushing forward with its vision for more interactive and user-friendly TV devices.
