Apple is reportedly working on developing a 3D sensor technology that could soon be integrated into future iPhone models. This advancement has sparked excitement among users, who believe it could significantly enhance the AR (Augmented Reality) capabilities of the device. Apple has shown strong interest in the AR space, and many analysts believe that AR adoption will grow faster than expected.
The company is focusing on adding a rear-mounted 3D sensor to the next generation of iPhones. This sensor would allow for more accurate spatial mapping, making AR experiences more immersive and realistic. Current smartphone AR tools, like Amazon’s new AR feature, still have limitations. For example, while these tools can detect walls and doors, they struggle with objects like chairs or beds that block the camera's view.
A recent image shows a potential design for a future iPhone equipped with a rear 3D sensor, which could revolutionize how AR functions work. The technology behind this is already available—Apple’s TrueDepth system, used in the iPhone X, projects 30,000 laser dots to create 3D maps. If applied to the rear of the phone, it could map entire rooms with high precision.
In addition to TrueDepth, Apple may also use "Time of Flight" technology, which measures the time it takes for light to bounce off objects. Many companies, including Sony, Infineon, and STMicroelectronics, have already developed similar sensors. Apple is reportedly in talks with some of these firms to integrate them into future devices.
This new hardware would not only improve AR gaming but also make apps like Amazon more useful by allowing users to place virtual items in real spaces with greater accuracy. Experts suggest that Apple might introduce 3D camera technology in the next year, though it’s not confirmed yet. However, the company is actively testing the feature.
The iPhone X already features a telephoto and wide-angle lens arranged vertically, which helps AR applications perform better compared to earlier models like the iPhone 8 Plus. Despite this, current AR apps are limited by the lack of advanced 3D tracking. Unlike Microsoft HoloLens, which can track complex environments, the iPhone’s camera struggles with uneven surfaces or objects that block the view.
Adding a rear 3D sensor would overcome these limitations, making AR more realistic and functional. Apple CEO Tim Cook has been vocal about his enthusiasm for AR, stating that he believes its impact will rival that of mobile apps. Additionally, Apple has formed a team called T288 to develop AR glasses, with ARKit being one of their key projects.
However, the integration of 3D sensors could complicate the ecosystem. With multiple iPhone models supporting different AR hardware standards, developers may face challenges in creating consistent experiences. While the future of AR looks promising, the path to widespread adoption still has some hurdles to overcome.
