Future iPhone will be equipped with a rear 3D sensor to further enhance AR functions

Apple is reportedly working on developing a 3D sensor technology that could be integrated into future iPhones. Many users speculate that this advancement will significantly enhance the AR capabilities of Apple’s smartphones, and the company remains highly optimistic about the potential of augmented reality. Some believe that AR adoption may happen sooner than expected. The new rear-mounted 3D sensor is designed to improve the accuracy and depth perception of AR features. This would allow for more immersive and realistic interactions within the digital space. Unlike current smartphone AR tools, which rely on standard cameras, the 3D sensor can map out entire environments with greater precision. For example, Amazon's latest AR tool allows users to place virtual items in their homes, but it struggles with objects like chairs or beds that block the camera's view. The 3D sensor could overcome these limitations, offering an experience similar to dedicated AR devices like Microsoft HoloLens. Apple’s ARKit has already paved the way for AR development, but adding a 3D sensor could take things to the next level. The technology behind this is already available through Apple’s TrueDepth system, which was first introduced on the iPhone X. This system uses 30,000 laser dots to create 3D images, and if applied to the rear of the phone, it could scan entire rooms. Alternatively, Apple might use "Time of Flight" technology, which measures how long it takes for a laser to bounce off an object and return to the phone. Several companies, including Sony, Infineon, Panasonic, and STMicroelectronics, have developed similar sensors, and Apple is reportedly exploring partnerships. With this new hardware, AR games and apps like Amazon could become much more interactive and useful. For instance, users could place virtual items anywhere in their home, even in areas partially blocked by real objects. Sources close to the matter suggest that Apple is testing 3D camera technology for the iPhone next year. While it’s not confirmed whether the feature will be included, the company is actively exploring its potential. The iPhone X already features a telephoto and wide-angle lens arranged vertically, unlike the horizontal layout on the iPhone 8 Plus. This setup helps AR apps function better, but without advanced 3D tracking, AR experiences remain limited. Current iPhone AR apps can only place objects on flat surfaces and struggle with obstacles. Adding a 3D sensor to the back of the iPhone would break these limitations, making AR more realistic and versatile. Apple CEO Tim Cook has shown strong interest in AR, comparing its future impact to that of mobile apps. Additionally, reports indicate that Apple has formed a team called T288 to work on AR glasses, with ARKit being one of their key projects. If the 3D sensor is added, it could lead to a more fragmented hardware landscape. With models like the 2019 iPhone, iPhone X, iPhone 8 series, and older devices supporting ARKit, developers would need to support multiple AR standards. Despite the challenges, the future of AR looks promising.
