Freescale's drive system microcontroller helps the automotive industry advance to 55MPG

Freescale Semiconductor introduced the new Qorivva MPC5777M multi-core microcontroller (MCU). This MCU series can provide excellent performance for a new generation of engine management solutions to help global automakers respond to regional vehicle fuel economy issues and safety trends.

Automakers are also facing increasing pressure from the government and consumers to improve overall fuel efficiency (for example, the United States sets a target of 54.5 MPG by 2025) while reducing pollution emissions. This can be achieved through tighter computerized control of the complete combustion process of the engine.

Freescale's drive system microcontroller assists the automotive industry to advance to 55MPG

In view of the new fuel options and the increasing safety requirements brought mainly by electric vehicles, automakers must rack their brains and skillfully handle the increasingly complex drive system platform. As a pioneer and leader in the transmission system market, Freescale has foreseen these needs and continues to work with global automotive foundries and first-line suppliers to develop controller kits that can drive cars after 2025.

Qorivva MPC5777M can drive traditional diesel and gasoline direct injection systems and reduce emissions from stationary by 25%. It can also drive hybrid electric vehicles and pure electric vehicles, so it can help meet the above needs. The MPC5777M MCU has three times the performance of Freescale's Qorivva MPC5674F MCU and has the industry's highest official performance rating score. With this level of efficiency, car manufacturers can simultaneously improve fuel efficiency and reduce emissions. The intelligent single-chip parTITIoning of the MCU switches the high-efficiency and low-power operation mode in an analog manner in an instant, reducing the load of increasingly complex automotive electrical systems. The built-in digital signal processor can perform more advanced filtering to reduce the overall system cost.

Ray Cornyn, vice president of global marketing for Freescale's MCU business, said: "As the global drivetrain market continues to grow, Freescale is making every effort to provide the value and capabilities needed to develop future control engines to meet customer needs. Both the Qorivva MPC5777M component and the electronic brake system MCU we recently launched at ConTInental demonstrate Freescale ’s leadership in the most cutting-edge areas of automotive electronics. "

For automotive manufacturers and system suppliers, functional safety and security have become increasingly important. MPC5777M is the latest Freescale SafeAssure functional safety solution. It was developed in response to the ISO 26262 standard. The MPC5777M follows functional safety technology and ASIL-D, and includes it in the new generation of drive controllers. The hardware also incorporates several key features to assist R & D personnel in developing new safety solutions.

Due to the large amount of data flowing in today's automobiles, automobile manufacturers must try to protect the safety of control systems from software attacks. The MPC5777M MCU is equipped with a hardware security module (HSM) to prevent hackers from controlling the engine control unit. In addition, tamper protection also prevents unauthorized code changes, power changes, and tampering emissions.

To help customers quickly introduce their own designs to the market, Freescale provides complete auxiliary solutions for drive system research and development, including complete software libraries and reference solutions, as well as complete hardware and software integration. Freescale also provides a number of advanced R & D tool kits from partners, such as Green Hills and Lauterbach.

In addition to the Qorivva MPC5777M series, Freescale will also introduce the MPC5744K and MPC5746M series, all using the same Power Architecture technology. After the launch of the product, Freescale has been equipped with memory expansion conditions from 2.5 MB to 8 MB, allowing customers to freely adjust according to the growth and diversification of the product line. Alpha samples of MPC5777M MCU are now available. General market samples are expected to be launched in the third quarter of 2013. Alpha samples of MPC5744K are also available, and samples for general market are expected to be launched in 2014.
